Neighborhood: Old Town Chinatown

225 SW Ash St
Portland, OR 97204

503-226-0430

Description:
Although utilitarian in appearance, this downtown joint is comfy. Mix-and-match tables and chairs litter the smoky main room. Video poker, arcade games and a lone foosball table call out for quarters. The staples of Northwest nightlife are available in bottles and on tap, even Jägermeister. An adjacent room houses an additional bar and stage with music seven nights a week. Plush booths envelope wallflowers, as the less inhibited shake it out on the dance floor.

This is a great place to go for live music, and they make one of the best margaritas in town, muddled lime and everything. Watch out, though, for the older chubby lady bartender with long blonde hair. If you’re not paying attention, she will beyond doubt try to shortchange you. Last night I gave her a $100.00 and she gave me back change for a $20.00, trying to play it off as a simple mistake. I knew different however, because this is the second time she’s made this “mistake” with me. Last time it was a fifty. I didn’t tip her, so for the rest of the night she wouldn’t serve me, skipped over me and told me to “fuck right off” the next time I came up to the bar. I talked to two other patrons about it and, lo and behold, they too had stories of shortchange “mistakes” in the past with this woman. Go to the Ash Street by all means. It really is a great place. But avoid this woman like the plague. Use the other bar in the music room or get your drinks from the wait staff.
Pros:
Good live music, great margaritas
Cons:
count your change
