River Pigs were men who drove the timber down the river to the nearest saw mills. When the logs jammed, the River Pigs would walk across and use a 12 foot pike to dislodge them. Given the dangerous nature of this task, it was not a surprise when a River Pig died on the job. But with high risk came high reward.
River Pigs were paid handsomely, much more than other lumberjacks, and at the end of a risky day’s work would oftentimes relax.
